+This Sea Bear Pendant was hand-carved in argillite by Haida artist Ron Russ in 1983.
In Kwakwaka'wakw mythology, the Sea Bear is an undersea bear that lives in the Sea Kingdom. The Sea Kingdom includes all sea creatures both real and mythical and includes animals and birds who are the counterparts of the creatures who dwell in the Earth and Sky Kingdoms. The Sea Bear is identifiable by his fish-like gills at the sides of his mouth, and the prickly spines on the top of his snout.
The pendant measures approximately 2 inches or 5 centimeters high, 1 1/8 inches or 3 centimeters wide, and 3/4 inch or 2 centimeters deep.
